On February 8, 2017 at the Embassy of Kazakhstan to Austria – The Permanent Mission to the International Organizations in Vienna held a ceremony during which the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Yukiya Amano, and the Executive Secretary of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) Lassina Zerbo, were awarded with the medal "25 years of Independence of the Republic of Kazakhstan". Given in accordance with the decree of the President of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev, the medals recognize their contribution to the development of relations between Kazakhstan and these international organizations.
Permanent Representative of Kazakhstan to the International Organizations in Vienna, Kairat Sarybay, noted the achievements of our country in the field of nuclear non-proliferation and the effective cooperation between Kazakhstan and the IAEA and CTBTO in the area of strengthening the nuclear nonproliferation regime. The attention of participants was drawn to the initiatives announced at the 70th session of the UN General Assembly by the President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev. The Manifesto "The World. XXI Century" has been released as a UN document.
The awarded guests congratulated the people of Kazakhstan on the 25th anniversary of Independence, and expressed their gratitude to President Nursultan Nazarbayev for the appreciation of their activities and Kazakhstan’s contribution to strengthening international security, particularly in the area of nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament.
Director General of the IAEA, Yukiya Amano, stressed that under the leadership of President Nursultan Nazarbayev, Kazakhstan had made a key contribution to nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament. Dr Amano expressed appreciation for the support to establish the IAEA Low enriched uranium Bank in Kazakhstan and the implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action on the Iranian nuclear programme.
The CTBTO Executive Secretary, Lassina Zerbo, noted the important role of President Nursultan Nazarbayev in the process of nuclear disarmament; in particular the decision to close the Semipalatinsk test site, which created the conditions for subsequent adoption of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT). Dr Zerbo also noted that Kazakhstan is one of the most active partners of the Organization and that he valued greatly the activities of our country as Co-chair of the Article 14 of the Conference of the CTBT.
Foreign Ambassadors, representatives of the Foreign Ministry of Austria and international organizations located in Vienna, as well as local media participated in the award ceremony.
